About Stirling
Stirling is the smallest city in Scotland. A royal burgh until 1975, it was granted city status in 2002 as part of the celebration of Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee. Stirling's Church of the Holy Rude is the most interesting historical sight in the region. Rebuilt in the 15th Century after a disastrous fire, it remains one of two surviving churches in Britain which have held a coronation. In 1567, it saw the crowning ceremony of James VI of Scotland, the infant son of Mary Queen of Scots. The tower still bears gunshot marks, a remnant of the 17th-Century attack by Cromwell's army.
