About Swansea
A city of about 225,000 inhabitants, Swansea lies in the Swansea Bay, which is located in southern Wales next to the Gower Peninsula. The area surrounding the town is famous for its outstanding natural beauty and some of the most spectacular beaches in Britain, which are equally popular for families with children, hikers and water sports enthusiasts. A major centre of copper-smelting and one of the largest coal exporters during the 18th and the 19th Centuries, today Swansea focuses mainly on high-tech industries and tourism. The city also prides itself as the hometown of the poet Dylan Thomas and the international movie star Catherine Zeta-Jones.
