Gothenburg Overview
Gothenburg, or Goteborg, is an urban centre with regional government. Located in Vastergotland District of Sweden, it has 478 055 inhabitants and an area of 451 square kilometres. The greater area has population in excess of 600 000. It is a regional center on the western coast and second only to Stockholm in terms of territorial extent.
At the beginning of the 1600s Sweden had control over a single site on the western coastline. In 1621 King Gustaf II established Gothenburg. Within 37 years all territories in the east, formerly ruled by Danes, were annexed by Sweden in the context of the wars.
Traditionally, Dutch, Scottish and German are all spoken here. This is a result of marine trade, a major activity in the city that brought together people of many nations and contributed to the development of an ethnic culture. Gothenburg is largely influenced by foreigners to this day, being a major tourist destination in Scandinavia.
It offers all modern conveniences, a friendly, comfortable environment, and a large number of interesting sites and attractions. Families are invited to visit the Universeum, a scientific centre dedicated to discoveries in this field. You will find sharks, tropical forests and the latest technology exhibited here. Guests are encouraged to do their own experiments!
The Museum of World Culture and Liseberg amusement park are a short stroll away. Exciting, innovative and inspiring, the MWC will open your heart to new ideas and concepts. A gift shop, restaurant and café are also onsite. The building has five exhibition rooms where a variety of interesting items are on display. Its spacious areas and glass walls guarantee a relaxing experience. This museum was constructed by Brisac/Gonzalez Architecture following an extensive tender procedure. It was completed in 2004. The museum supports international culture and offers an objective, inspirational view of it.
