Malmo travel guide
Malmö is Sweden's third largest city with a population of about 270,000. It was first mentioned in the 12th Century. Initially under Danish control, it was captured by the Swedish King Magnus Eriksson in 1332, was regained by the Danish King Valdemar Atterdag in 1360, and finally passed to Sweden in 1658 under King Karl X Gustav in 1658. It is a modern industrial city with a large university. Notably, its two most famous sights are modern structures: Santiago Calatrava's Turning Torso building, and the Öresund Bridge connecting Malmö with Denmark.
The largest square in Malmö is called Stortorget. In its center is the equestrian statue of King Karl X Gustav. Built in 1536, it was for a long time the largest city square in Northern Europe. The city hall also dates back to the 16th century. Next to it is the Residence of the County Governor, in 17th-century Renaissance style.
St Peter's Church behind the City Hall is the oldest building in Malmö, dating back to the 14th Century. The original Medieval frescoes were whitewashed during the Reformation.
Lilla Torg was built as a market square in the late 15th Century. It is full of open-air restaurants and cafes and is a favourite meeting place. Outdoor concerts are held in summer in the Hdmanska Garden. West of Lilla Torg lies an area called Gamla Väster, with quiet streets and low buildings in bright colours housing art galleries and expensive boutiques.
Möllevangstorget square is worth visiting for the lively and colourful open-air market. The streets off the square are full of shops and cozy restaurants.
Malmöhus Castle was built as a citadel in 1436. The royal family often stayed there during the 16th century. Used later as a fortress and a prison, today it houses museum collections.
The Turning Torso, a twisted apartment building by Santiago Calatrava, rises to 190 m and is the tallest building in Sweden. The daring project was inspired by an actual sculpture, also called 'Turning Torso'.
