Brighton Overview

Brighton is by far the most famous seaside resort in England. With its population of 247,800 people, it is also the biggest one. Brighton and its twin city, Hove, form a conglomeration on the principle of 'opposites attract' - exciting and full-of-energy Brighton stands next to the calm and quiet Hove. The two boroughs were joined together in 1997; they are part of Sussex County.

The first name of Brighton was Beorthelm. That is the name under which you can find it in old literature. The first signs of human activity in the region date back to 3500 BC. Unfortunately, an unwise building project in the 1990s over and next to one of the most interesting archaeological sites resulted in it being damaged, showing us once again that the progress of civilization should not be achieved at the expense of cultural and natural heritage, lest we deprive ourselves of it.

The archaeological remnants are everywhere to remind you of the glorious and lengthy past of the people who lived there. For example, the small park on Old Soreham Road, where you'll find the Goldstone (believed to have been used as some kind of ceremonial altar around 2000 BC). Objects dating back to the Bronze Age prove that civilization has deep roots in this location.

Being one of the southern-most settlements in England, Brighton was a place where every invader in history passed through. Romans built villas and roads throughout the entire region. Numerous artifacts like Roman statues, broaches, and other jewelry were readily found in the area. People with a flair for history and archaeology will be delighted to see the Hove Amber Cup, found in a burial mound. The Hollingbury Camp Celtic (pre-Roman) site is considered by everyone the most impressive archaeological site in the region. It also provides a panoramic birds-eye-view over Brighton. You can enjoy yourself and learn a lot at the same time in the Hove Museum.

The city has a large and influential gay community, which organizes a Gay Parade every August. Accordingly, there are a surprising number of pubs, discos, and nightclubs, and famous DJ Fatboy Slim (who happens to be gay as well) comes from Brighton.
