Cambridge Overview

Home to the world-famous University of Cambridge, which is one of the cultural cradles of the Western world and the birthplace of all academic spirit, the city of Cambridge has multiple reasons to claim greatness. A relaxed stroll down through the maze of little streets and the touch of the stone walls of old university buildings will set your imagination running.

Cambridge is located about 100 kilometres from London. The city's history and prosperity have always been strongly tied to the university, which is the second-oldest university in Britain after Oxford University, traditionally its greatest rival. Cambridge University was founded in the 11th Century by academics from Oxford University, who disagreed with the direction of development of the latter and decided to create an alternative. The oldest building of the contemporary campus is the Erasmus Building in St John's College, although the oldest college as an institution is Peterhouse.

Trinity College’s main gate, main courtyard, Queen’s College Master’s lodge and the Mathematical Bridge are only several of the sights that you should definitely see. Right beside the main gate, you’ll find an interesting statue of King Henry VIII holding an orb and a wooden chair leg. The Queen’s College Master’s lodge often holds open-air performances of Shakespeare plays in May and June. The wooden Mathematical Bridge will be fascinating for those interested in science, as it was designed according to mathematical formulae.

Cambridge and Oxford lie at a similar distance from London – Oxford to the west and Cambridge to the north. The two academic bodies have always been in noble competition; not only in the famous rowing finals, but also in scientific achievements. In order to be admitted to the University, students had to fulfill a set of strict requirements. For instance, in the 19th Century, all applicants were expected to remain single, and until well into the second half of the 20th Century, they were still obliged to take their exams in Latin.
