Your travel to Windermere
England as the land of rain, fog and swampy forests is just one side of the coin. For those who live there and those who have visited, the island has another. England is also a place of greenery and water, one of many faces and fresh sunshine, modern cities and charming villages, with a tradition and beauty of its own.
Evidence of this other side comes from the region of Cumbria, the Lake District. Green scenery and the serene waters of magnificent lakes spread over its land. You will find here the longest lake in England, the Windermere, over 10 miles in length. At the lakeside, adorable villages and small towns welcome tourists and visitors into the charms of the magical surroundings. The town of Windermere remained unfounded before 1847, when the railway reached the area, terminating there. The small settlement was composed of small separate houses and cottages and carried the name of Birthwaite. Once the railway station was established, the town became more popular and could be easily reached by all who had previously ignored it. Then it took the name of the lake and a few years later became one of the most intriguing spots for nature lovers and tourists in England. In 1860, Windermere was first listed in the annual guidebook. The railway was never elongated, and nowadays it still has its final station at the small and fascinating town of Windermere.
The former secret settlement has turned today into a tourist attraction, though preserving its virgin charm. The old Victorian houses have been transformed into cozy hotels and welcoming guesthouses. Though less popular than its neighbor Bowness-on-Windermere, the town boasts splendid scenery and a myriad of attractions. Walks along the lakeside or the surrounding area, boat trips to neighboring settlements, all kinds of water sports combined with entertainment in the English way attract many visitors every year. The town is small, but offers intact parts of its history and art. Especially worthy is a visit to the two churches: Saint Mary's, with its beautiful Victorian glass windows, and Saint John the Evangelist's. The rustic atmosphere and cheerful pubs will host you for a beer among the locals, where amazing stories are often traded for all to hear.
