Ganshoren
Right from first sight, Ganshoren is a commune of contrasts. A few steps away from the avenue Charles Quint, the fast road link to the coast with its heavy traffic, lies old Ganshoren, with its old farms and agricultural areas keeping it genuinely rural. Juxtaposed with the Baudouin park (located in the neighbouring commune), the Domaine de Rivieren, a nature reserve and haven for birds attracts naturalists. The Elisabeth park, which is in the Koekelberg plateau, opposite the Basilica, covers an area of 21 hectares, of which 9 are in Ganshoren and the remainder in Koekelberg. It was through the inspiration of Léopold II that the previously rural plateau was turned into a public park. Today, this park is a large open area for walking, surrounded by tree-lined paths and with a playground, a bandstand and an area for relaxation. Given its proximity to the centre coupled with its rural areas, Ganshoren leads a double life where tranquillity reigns.
