Latin Quarter is definitely one of the most interesting districts in Paris. It is situated on the left bank of the river Seine very close to Ile de la Cité and Ile St. Louis islands and the city centre of Paris. The area is famous for its Bohemian spirit and lots of stylish cafes, bookstores and antique shops. There are also two landmarks in this neighbourhood: La Sorbonne and Pantheon. La Sorbonne is one of the oldest and most famous European universities. It was founded in 1257 by Robert de Sorbon. At first it was quite small, but nowadays it consists of 13 departments like: Panthéon-Sorbonne, Panthéon-Assas, Sorbonne nouvelle and Paris-Sorbonne. As a result it now overlooks the whole city centre of French capital. Pantheon is associated with great physicist Léon Foucault who permformed here his experiment that showed the rotation of the Earth. However Pantheon is also a burial place of many famous people including: Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Émile Zola, Jean Monnet, Pierre Curie, Marie Curie, Alexandre Dumas and others. Quarter Latin is also a great place for relax as picturesque Jardin des Plantes is situated in this area.
