Prenzlauer Berg
Prenzlauer Berg has been raised in the second half of the 19th century as a workmen’s district. In the era of GDR it was a centre of writers, culture initiatives and students. Elder buildings like the water tower with its impressing silhouette near Kollwitzplatz or Berlin’s first beer garden “Prater” in Kastanienallee still witness the times when Prenzlauer Berg was good for a Sunday trip into nature. The townscape is dominated by the already restored Wilhelminian apartment houses. Countless pubs, bars, cafes and galleries provide a nightlife which offers unique opportunities; especially Kastanienallee, Kollwitzplatz (where sculpturist Kathe Kollwitz lived), the Kulturbrauerei (an enormous former brewery site, shaped in the architecture of a middle-age castle and costly restored) and the Helmholtzplatz are first – choice places for clubbing.
