Charlottenburg
The district is mostly associated with Charlottenburg Palace and fair centre. The palace is the largest and one of the most beautiful in Brandenburg. It was built in the end of XVIIth century for Sophie Charlotte and remained summer residence of Prussian Royal Family for many ages. The construction was designed by Johan Arnold Nering and Martin Gruenberg. In the years 1787-1791 it was extended by palace theatre built into the western wing of Great Orangery. The palace itself is a masterpiece of German baroque style with it’s great examples like Great Oak Gallery and Porcelain Room. At present, there is a Museum of Pre- and Early History with great exhibition devoted to Heinrich Schliemann and his excavations in the ancient city of Troy. This museum is located in the former palace theatre. Charlottenburg Palace is surrounded by picturesque park complex. Apart from pleasant views its main attraction is mausoleum of Queen Luise and Friedrich Wilhelm III. The neighbourhood Charlottenburg is well-known as the location of Berlin Fair and Convention Centre. The exhibition halls are placed between Teufelsberg (Devil Hill) and highway that leads from Hannover to Rostock.
