Abbey Street
Abbey Street is one of the main thoroughfares of the city, being an important street in 1756 when Rocque’s map called it Great Abbey Street and Little Abbey Street. Divided into three parts, Upper, Middle and Lower, the street derives its name from the medieval St Mary’s Abbey which was founded in 1139 and affiliated to the monastery of Savigny before it came under the Cistercian order in 1147. Many parts of Lower and Middle Abbey Street was reconstructed after the Easter Rising of 1916 as many buildings were damaged by fire or bombardment.
