Mostly referred to as Florence's oldest structure, Battistero di San Giovanni dominates the Piazza del Duomo. Characterised by gigantic bronze doors with marble lions, this minor basilica had its start as an ancient Roman sanctuary dedicated to the god of war, Mars, the patron of Florence.
