The centre of Venice is located on island that is divided into two parts by the main water channel – Canale Grande. This is a characterisitic and well-known tourist attraction. Most of travelmakers spend hours on travelling by gondolas. In fact these boats are the only means of transport in this unique city, especially if you want to visit it thoroughly. There are a lot of places worth seeing. However San Marco Plaza is concerned as the heart of Venice. This is a very spacious square, surrounded by old, medieval houses. There is an unusual bell tower on the east side of it, called Torre dell’Orologio. Moving inside the city it is necessary to see the sixteenth century Rialto Bridge and Palazzo Ducale (Doge Palace). Nowadays it is one of the most interesting Venetian museums. The others are: Marciano, Correr, Mocenigo, Naval, Natural History, Academia and Guggenheim. Venice has always been an Italian city, although there were periods when it was independent from the mainland country. The Jews used to be one of the main minority in Venice. In the XVIth century one of the ruling Doges forced them to move to the ironworks’ district (called geto in Venetian dialect) and this is how the word ghetto was founded. Finally Venice is the city of great churches, built in different architectural styles. The most famous of them are: Basilica di Santa Maria Glosiora dei Frari (I Frari), Chiesa di Santa Maria della Salute and Chiesa di San Giorgio Maggiore.
