Dam Square
Dam Square is one of the most famous hotspots in Amsterdam. It was created in the XIIIth century and took its name from the dam that was built to prevent the Zuiderzee from submerging the downtown. At present there are: cafes, food stalls, posh restaurants and stores around the square. However the Royal Palace is surely the most fascinating monument located on the Dam Square. It was built in the XVIIth century for the royal family. Currently the king doesn’t reside here, but some official meetings are still held in the palace. If you look southwards you will see National Memorial statue that commemorates Dutch soldiers who died during the Second World War. Two other worth seeing places in the vicinity of the Dam Square are: Madame Tussauds Museum and Nieuwe Kerk.
