L'Eixample
Barcelon’a l'Eixample is fabulous place to wander, particularly for those claustrophobes who feel cramped by the tight spaces of the older neighborhoods. The circumstances, leading to its development are simply remarkable. Right around the time when the oppressive Bourbon walls around the old city were finally demolished in 1854, the Catalan cultural Renaixença was picking up. L'Eixample's gridded streets are filled with relatively wealthy residents, designer shops, corporate buildings, and eateries from around the world. Most tourists only see the Pg. de Gràcia and Sagrada Família areas, but if you have the energy to explore the whole neighborhood, you'll get a great lesson in Modernisme, and a better feel for the Barcelona beyond the tourists.
