Guide to Harrogate Useful information
Castlefield - G-Mex
Castlefield's greatest attractions are the remainings of the Roman fort and the Museum of Science and Industry. The fort was built in 79 A.D. and was the beginning of the settlement in this area. Nowadays there is an Urban Heritage Park here that presents the forms of architecture characteristic for industrial Manchester. Next to it you will find the Museum of Science and Industry. It consists of five main parts: the main building, 1830s warehouse, station building, power hall and air & space hall. The main building was constructed in 1880 as a warehouse for Great Western Railway Company. The cars were loaded and unloaded inside it standing on one of two floor levels: track level and loading platform level. 1830s Warehouse was the first warehouse that was placed next to railway station. The building barely changed its design and interiors and as a result, there are still some XIXth century features inside like Victorian office, hydraulic crane and gas light fittings. Station Building is the oldest passenger railway station worldwide. It was completed in 1831 and gave Manchester a connection with other English cities. The last vital information concerning Castlefield relates to G-Mex convention centre that is located between Castlefield and Chinatown. The most important meetings and fairs are held here.
