Transportation in Rome

Rome boasts an extensive integrated public transportation system, providing visitors and locals with buses, subways, trams and a suburban train network. The city has two subway lines, A and B.

The main airport Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) is located 26km southwest of the city centre. A train links the airport and central railway station Stazione Termini, which leaves every 30 minutes between 5.52am and 10.52pm. The trip takes 30 minutes at a cost of 9,50 EUR. Another train runs every 15 minutes from the airport to the local stations of Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina for 5,00 EUR. A night bus also travels from the airport to the train station in Tiburtina.

Taxis from the airport during the day charge meter rates, as well as a supplement of 7,23 EUR and 1,03 EUR for each piece of luggage. The other airport Ciampino is located some 20km southeast of the city centre. Ciampino mainly serves domestic and charter flights. There are COTRAL buses that leave every 15 minutes from Ciampino airport to the ANAGNINA stop of Subway Line A at a cost of 1,00 EUR, or to Termini Station for 5,00 EUR. A taxi from Ciampino to Rome’s city centre costs 30–40 EUR.

Taxi
Taxi rates are reasonable, but expensive during peak hours, and difficult to hail on the street or even at a stand. Calling to reserve a taxi is the best option, even from a restaurant or your point of interest. Avoid paying fares with large bills because taxi drivers claim they do not have change, hoping for a larger tip.

Before boarding, travelers must validate their tickets by inserting them in the validation machine, found in the station or on the platform. Tiburtina Station is the second largest train station in the city, accessible by bus and metro (Line B) from the centre. Prices depend on destination.
Buses and Trams
Buses and trams in Rome are operated by Azienda Tramvie e Autobus del Comune di Roma (ATAC). A 1,00 EUR bus ticket, valid for 75 minutes, allows travel to many parts of Rome, although buses are generally very crowded. The same ticket allows travel on most buses, trams and the metro. A one-day ticket (Integrated Daily Ticket) or weekly ticket (Integrated Weekly Pass) can be purchased at Stazione Termini. These passes allow travel on the ATAC network without buying individual tickets. The tourist pass/ticket is valid for three days. Bus and tram stops are marked with FERMATA. In general, they are in daily service from 6am to 12pm. Special night buses which run only main routes are also available, indicated by an ‘N’ in front of the bus number.
