Schools in Paris
Paris has about 9,000 schools and educational institutions that fall within three main categories: primary, junior secondary (colleges) and senior secondary (lycees). Like all other educational institutions in France, they are largely controlled by the government. That stated, nearly 20 percent of pupils attend private, non-state schools, with the majority of them being operated by the Roman Catholic Church. With 17 public universities and an upwards of 350,000 enrolled students, the Paris Region is home to the largest concentration of university students in Europe. The high quality of education and prestige ascribed to Parisian universities, of which the University of Paris (or the Sorbonne) is the most renowned, are two of many reasons why such a great number of international students decide to study abroad in Paris.
