Heroes' Square

Built in 1896 on the occasion of the Hungarian millennium, the Heroes' Square is an important testimony of 19th-century Hungarian nationalism. Situated at the entrance to the famous City Park (Városliget), this wide-open square is one of the few left-overs of the Communist era.

Mary Magdelene Tower

Nowadays, the Mary Magdelene Tower (Mária Magdolna Torony) is the only part that has remained of the Romanesque Franciscan church from the 13th Century which once stood at this spot. Although the tower is primarily a post-war reconstruction, it has a rich and turbulent history.

Margaret Island (Margitsziget)

Margaret Island, linked to the city centre by the Árpád and Margaret Bridges, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful landmarks in Budapest. This nearly 2.5 kilometre-long island is an ideal place to hide from the noise of the city. It was named after Princess Margaret, King's Bela IV's daughter who was sent to the Dominican convent built on this site in the 13th Century.

The Matthias Church

In the centre of Buda's Castle District stands the Mátyás Templom (officially called the Church of Our Lady). It owes its name to King Matthias Corvinus who ordered the construction of the first tower of the church. This 700-year-old building serves as a symbol of the city's rich and tragic history.

Built to celebrate the Hungarian millennium, the splendid State Opera House (Magyar Állami Operaház) was finally opened in 1884. Considered one of the most beautiful historical buildings in Budapest, this impressive neo-Renaissance building is set on Andrássy utca, in the very heart of the city.

Royal Palace (Budavári palota)

Dominating the southern skyline of the Castle District, the Royal Palace is a mock historic structure, including several original features from the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries. The first building appeared on this site in 1241 under the reign of King Béla IV. Then, in the 15th Century, a large Gothic palace was established by King Sigismund of Luxembourg. Considered one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe, the golden era of this building came under the rule of King Matthias, between 1451 and 1490. At the time it was a heart of cultural life in Budapest, attracting nobleman, scholars and artists who came to the city from all over Europe.
