Citadella
Address: Gellérthegy
see map
This impressive citadella was built by the Habsburg dynasty in the mid-19th Century. Due to its hill-top position, it was used to strengthen the Austrian dominance over the inhabitants of Buda after the failed Hungarian War of Independence during the years 1848-1849. Then the building was used as a prison camp and an anti-aircraft battery by Nazi forces during World War II. Nowadays, the building houses a nice restaurant, café and an inexpensive youth hostel. From the Citadella there is a magnificent view over the city. In the vicinity also stands the Liberation Monument and the statue of St Gellért.

Fishermen's Bastion
Address: Buda Castle District
This neo-Romanesque building is perched on the edge of Buda's Castle District, next to Matthias' Church and the Hilton Hotel. Built in 1905, it was primarily intended for decorative purposes, despite its military image. The Fishermen's Bastion consists of seven round towers that represent the seven brave Magyar tribes that contributed to the unification of Hungary over 1,000 years ago. The building attracts visitors with its decorative flowing staircases stretching alongside the Mátyás Templom. In the Middle Ages there was a local fish market just behind the church, hence the name of the Bastion.

Towering 230 metres above the Danube River, the Gellért Hill offers the best panorama of the city. It is named after the Italian Bishop Gellért, who helped Hungary's first Christian king, Stephen I, to convert the pagan Magyar tribes. He became a saint due to his martyr's death, as the pagans rolled his body down the hill in a barrel. Today in this place stands the grand bronze statue by Gyula Jankovits, with the bishop holding a cross in his hand. On top of the Gellért Hill there is also the Liberation Monument, built in 1947 to celebrate the Red Army's entrance to Budapest after the Nazi German defeat. Moreover, atop the Gellért Hill spreads the large Citadella. It was built by the Austrians for military control just after they concluded the Hungarian War of Independence in the years 1848-1849.
