Castles in Nice

Nice is not rich in ancient castles, although France as a country has much to offer. However, well worth visiting in the city of Nice is the charming Colline du Chateau, which overlooks the harbour and the Baie des Anges. Little remains of this castle, yet the views from its panoramic location are stunning. The castle stands 90 metres above the city and if you can’t face the strenuous climb, you can always take the lift, which goes three quarters of the way up. The castle grounds provide a backdrop of pine trees, figs, carobs, aloe and contain a lovely waterfall as well. There is a children's play area and admission is free.

Palais Lascaris
Address: 15, Rue Droite
  Phone: +33 4 9362 7240

Palais Lascaris is an exquisite example of the Genoese architectural style from the 17th Century. The construction of the marvelous mansion was completed in 1665 and it immediately became family residence of Lascaris de Vintimille, an aristocratic family from the surroundings of Nice. The building is remarkable above all with its opulent interior, lavishly ornamented with Baroque vaults and frescoes, unique paintings and Flemish tapestries. Undoubtedly, the highlight is the astonishing balustraded staircase, winding up to the top of the mansion. Especially valuable from historical point of view are the rare furnishings, some of which date back to the 12th Century. On the ground floor visitors can admire the extremely authentic restored pharmacy with a gift shop. The exterior of Palais Lascaris is not less spectacular. Amidst the old town of Nice, the building attracts attention with its richly coloured and decorated facade that stands out among the neighbouring houses in the narrow street.
Chateau de l'Anglais
Address: 29, Avenue Jean-Lorrain

Chateau de l'Anglais is situated near Mont Boron in the outskirts of Nice. It is a large pink-coloured castle, erected specially for the English colonel of the Indian army, Robert Smith, in 1858. From this fact the name of the structure derives, translated from French it means The Englishman's Castle. The picturesquely situated mansion features spectacular facade, in which both Gothic and Hindu elements can be recognised. The castle is a private property and houses several apartments.
