The Uspenski Cathedral is the largest and most important Orthodox church in
Finland. What is more, the massive temple is considered the biggest Eastern
Orthodox church in Western Europe. The Uspenski Cathedral was built according to the plans of the prominent Russian architect Alexey Gornostaev between 1862 and 1868. It was constructed from characteristic red bricks, which makes it stand out in the cityscape of Helsinki. Besides being the seat of the Finnish Orthodox Church in the diocese of Helsinki, the cathedral is also a prime tourist attraction.
