The Nice Observatory, or Observatoire de Nice, lies northeast of Nice on the summit of Mont Gros. It was built by the French architect and Eiffel Towerdesigner Charles Garnier. The dome which has a diameter of 24 metres, constructed by Gustave Eiffel in 1885, is the largest in Europe. Astrorama is located on the hills above Nice, where enormous telescopes reach to the stars.

The Institut Eurécom is a school of engineers and a research centre in Communications Systems. The school is small but very dynamic. It was created in Sophia-Antipolis by Télécom Paris and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 1991. Also it was joined by some other European universities such as the Politecnico di Torino and the Helsinki University of Technology. Eurécom has benefited from a strong interaction with the industrial world.
