Institutions in Nice

Nice has some rather impressive institutions especially those pertaining to education. The Institut Européen des Hautes Etudes Internationales (IEHEI) is a private institute for graduate studies and research into European integration and international relations, whilst the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM), is an institution, which promotes joint ventures in applied mathematics, information and communication technology research in Europe to stimulate greater co-operation in European industries. The Centre International de Formation Européenne  (CIFE) is part funded by the European Union, private business and the French government and specialises in the educational and research into European integration.

The Nice Observatory, or Observatoire de Nice, lies northeast of Nice on the summit of Mont Gros. It was built by the French architect and Eiffel Towerdesigner Charles Garnier. The dome which has a diameter of 24 metres, constructed by Gustave Eiffel in 1885, is the largest in Europe. Astrorama is located on the hills above Nice, where enormous telescopes reach to the stars.

The Institut Eurécom is a school of engineers and a research centre in Communications Systems. The school is small but very dynamic. It was created in Sophia-Antipolis by Télécom Paris and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 1991. Also it was joined by some other European universities such as the Politecnico di Torino and the Helsinki University of Technology. Eurécom has benefited from a strong interaction with the industrial world. Its current partners include France Télécom, Hitachi, Swisscom, Thales, SFR, STMicroelectronics, Cisco, BMW Group Research and Technology, and others.

The European Institute of Higher International Studies, or Institut Européen des Hautes Etudes Internationales (IEHEI), is a private international institution for graduate studies and research. The institute was founded in 1964 by the Centre International de Formation Européenne with the support of the city of Nice, as well as the European Commission (EC).

The main office is located in Nice, France. Jérôme Chailloux is the manager of ERCIM. Nice Actilangue School is a centre for French as a foreign language. The Actilangue School teaches French to foreigners and offers all year round French courses of high quality. The school was established in 1977 by Paul Ceccaldi. He is the Executive Director of Actilangue and is responsible for all aspects of the programme. Michel Durand is the Director of Studies. The Actilangue’s building is located in the centre of beautiful Nice, just a stone’s throw from Hotel Negresco. The beach and the beautiful and world famous Promenade des Anglais are just a few metres away.

The International Centre for European Training was founded in 1954 and has its headquarters located in Nice.

IPAG French Business School has two centres: one in Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris, and the other one near the Acropolis Congress Centre in Nice. The centre in Nice is prestigiously located in the city centre, not far from the Old Town. Since its inception in 1965, IPAG was supported by the famous economist who also belonged to the French Academy – Jacques Rueff.
