Institutions in Paris
As the capital of France, Paris is the place where all major institutions are located and where significant decisions with importance for the whole country are made. The Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) is an administrative building, which boasts the largest city hall in the whole of Europe. That's where facilities of modern technique such as telephones, hydraulic lifts, ventilation heating and electric lights were introduced for the first time. Other institutions, like the National Assembly, Senate, Constitutional Council and different ministries are located in Paris as well. The French capital is also famous for its universities, especially the historic University of Paris (Collège de Sorbonne) - one of the world's most prestigious academic institutions.

The Ministre de l'Economie, des Finances et de l'Industrie (Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industry) is probably the most important ministry in French government. Firstly, it is responsible for the budget of the country and secondly, it controls and manages France's taxation system. The headquarters of this ministry is situated in the 12th district of Bercy.

The Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts) is one of the most famous art schools in Europe. It is situated near the city centre of Paris at rue Bonaparte, in the quarter of Saint-Germain-des-Près. This art academy was established in 1648, and since that time has changed its name many times. However, it has always been associated with many famous artists and its high level of education. The present director of the school is Henry-Claude Cousseau.

The Hôtel de Lamoignon is a lovely piece of property situated by rue de Pavée, in the historic district of Marais. This building was constructed in the Renaissance style at the end of the 15th Century. Almost 100 years later the property was bought by Guillaume de Lamoignon de Blancmesnil. The hotel hosts the Historical Library of the city of Paris and boasts a large collection of different documents, manuscripts, maps, books and photos linked with the history of French capital. Moreover, its reading rooms are thought to be some of the most beautiful in all of Paris.

The Bibliotheque Nationale de France is the national French library. All publications and books published in France may be found here. This institution was established by King Charles V, the Wise, in 1368. Later, the library was developed by Louis XIV and the institution changed its name to the Imperial National Library. The most recent remodelling of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France began on the initiative of President François Mitterrand in 1988, and is now managed by the French Ministry of Culture.

L'Argonaute (Submarine)

Set in the Parc de la Villette, the Argonaute, a real submarine, was disarmed in 1982. Visitors can embark on exploration, with self-guiding headphones and listening to a commentary describing the interior, into the insides of the huge submarine and can walk through the entire lenght of the sub, from the crew station to the torpedo launching housing.

The Assemblée nationale (National Assembly of France) is the main part of the French parliament. It includes 577 voting politicians who represent different parties and are elected every five years. At present, the biggest parties the Assembly include the Socialist Party (Parti socialiste), the National Front (Front national), the French Communist Party (Parti communiste français), The Greens (Les Verts) Union for the presidential majority (Union pour la majorite presidentielle) and the Union for French Democracy (Union pour la démocratie française). The National Assembly of France works from the great Palais Bourbon, which is situated on the left bank of the river Seine. This palace itself is a pearl of architecture.

The Bourse de Paris, or 'Euronext', is the main French stock exchange situated in the city centre of Paris. The Paris stock exchange is one of the most important markets in the world. Thousands of companies' shares are traded here, including such tycoons as BNP Paribas, Vivendi, Danone, Renault, Crédit Agricole, Société Générale, France Télécom, Gaz de France, Bouygues, Accor, PSA Peugeot Citroën and Michelin. The main seat of Bourse de Paris is Palais Brongniart, near to the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and Opéra.
