Institutions in Athens
Taking into account the country’s archaeological wealth, the need for an effective archaeological service becomes obvious. Not only Greek, but also numerous foreign archaeological institutions operate in the city of Athens. The main establishments of higher learning include the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (established in 1837) and the National Technical University of Athens (established in 1836). A thriving theatrical tradition that constitutes a big part of the national identity is evidenced by innumerable theatres dotting the city. Of these, the National Theatre of Athens is the most prestigious venue. Characteristically, many societies devoted to the study of local and regional archaeology, history and folklore play a crucial role in the city’s intellectual and cultural development.

This structure displays the clear influence of the Corinthian style and is cleverly incorporated in its traditional Neo-classical layout. The National Theatre also bears some traces of Renaissance decoration. Erected in the period of 1895 – 1901, this structure is the work of German architect Hernest Ziller, the person responsible for the majority of important buildings in Athens. This one operated as the official royal theatre for the King up to 1908, when it became a public theatre.
