This fine museum-home was founded by Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli who was related to the Trivulzio family – one of the oldest, most cultivated and endowed families of Milan. He travelled across Italy and other countries to learn about art. He bought numerous masterpieces and developed an interest in applied arts such as tapestries, porcelains, arms, jewelry and antiques. All of these objects were gradually gathered together and today they constitute the Poldi Pezzoli collection.

The University of Milano or Università degli Studi di Milano is one the largest universities in the country with about 63,000 students. The teaching and research staff amounts to 2,455 and the non-teaching staff to 2,200.
The University of Milano is a member of the League of European research Universities. The University is also known as Statale; one of the reasons is to avoid confusion with other academic institutions in Milan. The Statale University was founded on September 30, 1923, when the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of the Milan Accademia was joined with the Istituti Clinici di Perfezionamento. The latter had been founded by Luigi Mangiagalli in 1906. In 1998, the so-called Second University of Milan was founded at Bicocca, today known as the University of Milano - Bicocca.

The name San Raffaele comes from the Hebrew word Raf-el, which means 'God heals' or 'God’s medicine'. San Raffaele Hospital is a private Scientific Institute, which belongs to the San Raffaele del Monte Tabor Foundation. The latter is recognised by the Italian Ministry of Health as a Scientific Institute that carries out biomedical research as well as clinical activities of relevant national interest. The mission of the San Raffaele Institute is to cure and assist diseased individuals. It follows the Gospel proposition: "Go, teach, heal.” The Scientific Institute San Raffaele was also recognised as Institute for Molecular Medicine in 2001.
