Institutions in Venice
Venice is a city steeped in culture and heritage. Its history of more than a thousand years is well-preserved through archival records, artifacts and various cultural events. There are several notable cultural institutions that open their doors for all who would like to broaden their knowledge of Venice’s fascinating culture and history. The city houses six public libraries, of which the largest and most prestigious is Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana with a huge collection of historical writings. The City Archive of Venice provides access to millions of documents that both give information about the known history of the city and reveal more obscure, 'hidden' facts.

The Marciana Library is the first Venetian public library. It was inaugurated in 1468, following the idea of the renowned poet Petrarch: that there should be a library in which everyone can have access to literature. The project was carried out by Cardinal Basil Bessarion, who donated a
large collection of about 750 codes.
