Institutions in London

London is home to many prestigious and ancient institutions, the most famous of which has to be The Houses of Parliament. Established in the Middle Ages, though not in its present form, the Houses of Parliament is home to British democracy. Alongside this impressive building officially known as the Palace of Westminster is one of the city’s leading landmarks, the huge clock tower known as Big Ben. Another key institution is the The Greater London Authority (GLA), responsible for the administration of the City of London. The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance is a unique place of learning, which teaches modern music such as reggae, jazz, funk and blues to budding musicians and singers. The Italian Cultural Institute is responsible for promoting Italian culture through the organisation of events, concerts and exhibitions. The London Library is the world’s largest independent subscription library housing over a million books covering all subject matters.

The London Library, located at the corner of St James Square, not far from Piccadilly Circus and Green Park Underground stations, is the world’s largest independent, self-supporting library, founded by Thomas Carlyle in 1841. It was founded with the aim to serve readers and scholars by giving books for home use. The library was the first to offer new books and provide books from several centuries only available in large reference libraries.

The Houses of Parliament, or Westminster Palace, is where the two London Houses of Parliament (House of Lords and House of Commons) meet. Westminster Palace is located on the north bank of the River Thames in Westminster, London, near other government buildings in Whitehall. The Palace is one of the largest parliaments in the world, with its buildings containing some 1,200 rooms, 100 staircases and over 3km of corridors.

The Old Bailey, more officially known as the Central Criminal Court, is located in close proximity to the infamous Newgate, London’s chief prison complex from the 13th Century. The main court building was reconstructed a number of times, first time after the Great Fire of London. The last reconstruction was completed in 1907 in neo-Classical style. It’s within the walls of the Old Bailey that a number of famous criminals, such as the poisoner-doctor William Palmer and the murderer Reggie Kray, met their sad end. The dome of the court seat it topped with a statue of Lady Justice; in her right hand, she is holding a sword, and in her left, weighing scales.
