Parks and Gardens in Barcelona

Barcelona's parks and gardens are popular venues where many people choose to spend their free time playing boules, chess or simply walking around and chatting. The Spanish also like to eat outdoors, so it's not a rare sight to spot whole families or groups of friends picnicking. The most famous Parc Güell, designed by Antonio Gaudi draws many visitors with its surreal attractions, for instance the large colourful lizard at the entrance. There are also some green areas on top of Montjuïc Mountain from where you can see all of Barcelona. Even in the city centre you'll find some retreats such as Parc de la Ciudadella. In Barcelona's parks and garden you can also take a closer look at the typically Mediterranean flora.

Parc Guell is a municipal garden, designed by famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. It was under construction from 1900 to 1914 and is on UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites. Gaudi's other buildings, likewise distinguished by UNESCO, are Casa Mila, Sagrada Familia, Casa Batllo, Casa Vicens, the Colonia Guell crypt and Palau Guell. All of these buildings are located in Barcelona and many in the Eixample district. Parc Guell is located in the district of Gracia. Originally the park was supposed to be a residential area, but this enterprise proved unsuccessful. Later a wealthy businessman, Eusebio de Guell, commissioned the construction. He wanted an elegant park for the high echelons of Barcelona society.

Accessibility is an important feature of any public facility and the Gardens Clot de la Mel can be reached by different means of transport – by bus, metro and on foot, of course. The gardens are not far from the Sports Complex Clot de la Mel (Complex Esportiu Clot de la Mel) and offer an area for children to play. Also, this green recreational area is not far from the larger Park Clot. The large open square that is peppered with groups of trees is occasionally used for local celebrations.

Parc del Besos is a green area that plays the role of a buffer between the busy streets that go along the Besos River and the river itself. Both the river and the park that is named after it have a double meaning because the word Besos translated literally means kisses. The Parc Fluvial del Besos passes through half of the city and a great deal of Barcelona could be seen if one would but follow its sinewy path.

The Coastal Park (Parc Litoral) as indicated by its very name is located just at the Mediterranean Sea line and in addition lies next to the estuary of the Besos River. This is a green space with a wide range of features and separate zones – the green part, the beach and the football stadium are some of Park Litoral’s attractions. As for the beach, its central situation in the Sant Adria de Besos district makes it very accessible both for locals and for tourists. The football facility offers a cheap way to enjoy the classic game in the city of Barcelona that is so famous for its professional players. Moreover, Park Litoral boasts a tennis court and a site for children to play, as well as wonderfully shady trees and the refreshing presence of a pool not far from the beach itself.

Being one of the youngest Barcelona parks, the Central Park of the zone Poble Nou is designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel, who also is the author of the newest Barcelona landmark- the Agbar Tower that can be found just at the Glories Catalanes Square in the same district. The triangle-shaped Park Poble Nou was a mere project in 2005 but the construction works began in 2006 and by 2007 it was already open to the public. Nevertheless, the park is still not in its completed state because the profuse flora that is planned to adorn it needs a couple of years to grow.

Barcelona, the capital city of Catalonia, boasts a marvellous location at the Mediterranean seaside and its perfect climate, which is the reason why flora and fauna are so diverse in this region. It is not vegetation, however, that makes Parc de la Ciutadella (Park of the Citadel) such an attractive point on Barcelona’s list of sights. What you can find here is the friendly atmosphere of chatting, lying in the sun on the aromatic grass and singing with the guitar players who tend to gather in the park. Another advantage of this park is the fact that it's located near the coast and at the same time in the very heart of this great city, which makes it easily accessible at all times.

Often referred to as Montjuic Park, or simply Montjuic, this is actually a huge mountain that divides part of the city of Barcelona from the sea and gives it a unique character of natural beauty. There are two theories about how the name came about – the first one says that it is derived from the old Catalan phrase meaning 'Hill of the Jews' and the other one suggests that it comes from the corruption of the Latin Mons Jovicus (‘Hill of Jupiter’).

It depends strongly on one's point of view whether one calls the Parc del Forum (Park of the Forum) a park or not because it doesn’t correspond to the classical idea of a green space. Calling it a leisure complex would be more like it but nevertheless, the inhabitants of Barcelona look upon it as a park. Situated on the Mediterranean seaside, this recreation area does have a lot to be seen, and a lot to offer in terms of relaxation. Covering 23 hectares the Forum Park is a large pen space with many curious structures in it, all of them designed for the people of Barcelona and for the city’s visitors as well. This modernist ensemble of water, green and built-up areas has incorporated important ideas of the 21st Century in its very composition such as sustainable development, urban planning, human rights and respect for diversity.
