One day outside Rome

Captivated by the historic and cultural sites Rome has to offer, many travellers fail to realise that there is more to the city than what lies within the city walls. Only a few miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, there is a diverse range of places waiting to excite and entertain the most demanding of visitors. Travellers can plan a trip to an amusement park or to the zoo or if more Roman culture is what you seek, historic cities and ancient baths lying in wait.

A day trip to Pompeii provides a fascinating day packed with activities and interesting sites. Pompeii is an open-air museum of an ancient roman settlement and excavation site. It is almost as if the city is frozen in time, as everything from pottery, clothes and paintings have been preserved in detail giving you the opportunity to see what life was like two thousand years ago. Whilst you are there, visit the house of the wealthy Vetti, the forum, which was a marketplace and was in full operation on the day of the volcanic eruption.

Another historical site is the UNESCO-protected Baths of Caracalla located 40 minutes south of the city. Whilst the baths are now in ruins, they were once the grandest and most elaborate bath complex in the whole of Italy. When visiting the baths of Caracalla it is still possible today to see the remains of some of the original rooms including in particular the changing rooms, the warm room, the cold room, and the steam rooms. At the centre of the baths, there was an open-air swimming pool. In their day, the baths were a central meeting place for both business and social gatherings. You can still see the original tables and chairs, which were used.

Tivoli has much to offer its visitors; not only can you make a wish by throwing a coin into one of its five fountains, but you can also visit the nearby aquaparks or the enormous central park. The Hydromania Aquapark is the largest in the surrounding area and it has a wide variety of rides from slides and rapids to giant wave pools. The park is renowned for the fastest slides in the whole of Italy. The Acquapiper is also located in Tivoli. It has around 20 different slides into different depths of water. The park is most famous for its fish bowl slide.
