Tips for a Day Out of Madrid
While the Spanish capital remains a widely congested city, which requires weeks or even months to explore in detail, its vicinity is surprisingly peaceful. If you'd like to go on a countryside trip outside Madrid, follow these basic rules and you will surely have a great time. Getting around is easy and fun as the locals are particularly friendly towards foreign visitors.
Identify Yourself
If you're from the United States or any non-EU member country, carry along your passport. EU citizens don't need passports but are required to have a valid picture ID with them at all times. If you plan to get around in your own vehicle, make sure your car meets all the international safety requirements, such as having a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit. Also, a valid international driving license is a must. If you travel with a pet, you might also be asked to show its passport and vaccination history. Carrying any dubious items, such as medicines without proof of legal purchase for example might pose a problem with the authorities. Some brands of painkillers or tranquillisers, which might be acceptable in your country, could be illegal in Spain.
Standards of Cleanliness
Finding places where you can wash yourself while riding the Spanish country roads is relatively easy. There are plenty of gas stations and most of them are equipped with shower and bathroom facilities. For a small fee, you will also receive a small bottle of shampoo and a soap. The bathrooms generally meet the European Union’s standards of cleanliness. However, carrying a pack of tissues and a small bar of soap can always come in handy.
Means of Transportation
If you don’t have your own vehicle, renting a car is always an option. At any car rental agency, you will be presented with a pair of keys and some basic car documentation, and you will be ready to go. Signposts are well distributed in all of Spain so getting around is relatively easy. If you happen to have problems finding your way around, rent a GPS device for a small additional fee. However, with the excellent condition of the roads and the well-marked ways out, a good map should be enough. If you'd like to spend a day far in the countryside, consider taking a bicycle with you. You might attach the bike to your car or go by train.
Remain Safe
If you decide to use public transportation, beware of pickpockets! Keep your personal belongings with you and never leave your bags unattended. Using an inner pocket or a waist belt to store your cash, credit cards and valuables is a wise idea. If you travel by car, stick to road regulations and refrain from speeding. Fasten your seatbelt: don’t follow the example of Madrid taxi drivers!
