Cultural Nice

Nice, the fifth largest city in France, radiates a relaxed atmosphere and exudes the climate of the French Riviera with its carefree lifestyle and tangible Corsican and Italian influences. Thanks to the rich history of the region, the city has a very distinct culture, which guarantees a wonderful stay. The city's great wealth of fine architecture and its diverse cultural life with highlights such as the Nice Jazz Festival and the Carnival in February, attract tourists from all over the world.

If you want to become acquainted with the culture of Nice and experience its atmosphere, stroll through the ochre coloured streets and listen to the Nicois, who speak their own language - Nissart. It is an Occitan dialect still spoken by some of the citizens and more intelligible than other non-extinct Provencal dialects.

Nice is an attractive destination frequented by tourists from all over the world. The city is not only renowned for its charm, but it has also become a hub of scientific, industrial and advanced technological research. Centres for researchers and scientists, such as the Acropolis and Sophia Antipolis, have been established in the city and its vicinity.

The city is both simple and elegant simultaneously, but most importantly, its charm is evoked by the exceptional climate, the beautiful architecture and the picturesque cafes. Year round, one may find it difficult to snag a table on the cafe terraces due to the popular pastime of having a coffee and watching others stroll along the famous Promenade des Anglais. This famous street is always adorned with blooming flowers and offers a wonderful view of the Baie des Anges and the coastal beaches.

You might expect shimmering golden-sand beaches, but this is not the case in Nice. The beaches are rocky and quite uninviting if you don't use a deckchair, which are available at the hotels situated along the coast. The beaches are beautiful, however, so don't let it ruin your impression of the whole marvelous city!

The architecture of Nice is astonishing - examples of the ever-present Belle Epoque style, as well as Baroque influences, can be found in the houses and mansions on the hills of Mont Boron. The most famous architectural sites in Nice are the Basilica Notre Dame, which is the oldest of the modern religious buildings, erected in the heart of the new town, and the opera building, which was constructed in 1885 according to the blueprints of the Nicois architect, Francois Aune, who wanted the opera to resemble the Palais Garnier in Paris.
