Among the city's better known galleries, Pitti was commissioned by Luca Pitti, a contemporary of the Medici family and one of their fierce opponents. The building was already a fact by the late 1400s, with the designs being attributed to Alberti. However, the structure remained incomplete until some 100 years later, when it was handed over to Duke Cosimo I. The site, consequently, became the property of the Medicis, and underwent a thorough restructuring in the 16th Century. Currently, one can view some 500 pieces of art on display, most of them stemming from the Medici collection. Apart from canvases, the vast halls contains an abundance of sculptures, jewellery, carved objects, tapestries, porcelains, even cutlery and textiles.
