Theatres in Brussels

Brussels has a very traditional industry when it comes to theatre. One of the most popular theatres - the Royale Theatre Toone, is tucked away in a building dating back to the 17th Century. It lies near the Grand Place and has three main purposes: it is home to a theatre, a pub and an often overlooked museum. Classic plays like 'King Lear' and 'Faust' are performed by puppets, which are controlled by seven experienced puppeteers. The performances are given in French, Flemish and on occasion in English. It is famous for its puppet performances performed by locals and small children. Another popular theatre, which stages more contemporary performances, is the Theatre le Public. This theatre is situated in the centre of the town hall, and has staged a wide variety of performance from 'Cats' to traditional shows like the 'Garde à vue'. Other notable theatres in the city include La Monnaie, the Royal Flemish Theatre and the Studio Theatre.

It expanded its programme and began to perform all year round in the two buildings it acquired and grew in influence as the art centre of Brussels. The programme of the theatre today focuses predominantly on modern works, including theatre plays, music and dance. Bigger production are held in its main building and other events take place in the smaller one - the Studios, a charmingly refurbished former brewery. Both are located very close to each other and just a few steps from the centre of the city.

Even before Brussels began to be considered the capital of Europe, it had the ambience of a cosmopolitan city. It cherished the traditions of Europe and appreciated the national contribution of all members of the future EU family. This attitude is best expressed in art. Proud of its theatrical traditions – both of the Flemish and French communities, Brussels encourages new establishments, the most popular of which is the English Comedy Club, or ECC, founded in the beginning of the 20th Century.
