Theatres in Milan
One of the main reasons why tourists love Milan is the opera and theatre houses. Locals and tourist regularly visit the theatre in their droves, making the industry one of the biggest in the city. There are two major theatres located in the city; Nazionale and Teatro Nuovo. Teatro Nuove was establish in 1938 and designed in a chic modern design by the architect Lancia. Many famous directors showcase their work here: Peppino de Filippo’s 'Natale in casa Cupiello' is just one example. The Nazionale is the largest theatre with the capacity to hold 1,575 people. Other noteworthy theatres include The Teatro Leonardo da Vinci, which was established in 1979 and is renowned for its drama and the 19th-century Teatro Manzoni, which is famed for its writers and directors as well as its jazz concerts performed every Sunday morning. Also worth visiting is the small Piccolo Teatro, which was established after World War II by one of Italy’s leading 20th-century film directors - Giorgio Strehler.

When the theatre was first established in 1947, it became the first Italian stage after the tragic memories of the wars. Opened with a Gorki play, the theatre then started with a varied scope of Italian and international plays, aiming to affirm the concept of "theatre for all" in the city of Milan. Inspired by its founders - Paolo Grassi and Giorgio Strehler, it evolved in one of the well-known Milanese stages, today enriching its theatrical palette with some contemporary interpretations of classic plays and also including modern theatre and light opera.

Centro di Ricerca Teatrale, or The centre for Theatrical Research, is part of the architectural ensemble of Palazzo dell'Arte di Milano, known as Trienale. The theatre here was first established in 1933. In the 50s it was managed by the RAI group, which turned it into a live television studio. Its purely theatrical core was created in the mid-70s. In 1983, the place launched its new theatrical activity as the CRT theatre and is, till today, dedicated to theatre.
