Theatres in Rome
Rome is a city that has great theatrical history stemming back to the early Romans. There is a large selection of both big and smaller theatres, which are well worth visiting. The Teatro Costanzi, for example, is Rome's best theatre located in a magnificent opera house and the Teatro dell'Opera, which stages fabulous opera and ballet has its own leading orchestra and ballet company. Another popular theatres is the Teatro alle Terme di Caracalla, an open air theatre, which houses summer performances of some of the best operas, plays and dramas in the world. The theatre is constructed of marble with gorgeous mosaics adorning the walls and floors. Looting, neglect, and an earthquake destroyed the architectural marvel, yet the remaining ruins provide an impressive historic backdrop to any performance given there. The Teatro dell'Orologio - a much smaller theatre, the Teatro Feliciano and the Teatro della Cometa also stage some excellent productions well worth seeing.

Teatro Argentina was founded back in 1732, thus being one of the oldest theatres in Rome. Many reconstructions have modified the original construction of the building which has allowed a larger scope of theatrical, dance and musical productions. The theatre is in fact an opera house, and throughout its long history it has hosted the premiers of some of the greatest Italian operas, some of which were authored by Verdi and Rossini. Today it still remains as a world-famous opera house, which also hosts cultural, public and political events, such as debates, conferences and poetry readings.

This is one of the typical Italian spots where entertainment and art come hand-in-hand in the best way the south could have mixed them. Both a cabaret and a site where live music is presented, Foro Italico is a theatre really worth spending at least one night while in Rome.

There could hardly be found a brighter symbol of Rome than the emblematic construction of the Coliseum. The Roman building, which is the biggest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire, has had various uses throughout the centuries. It has survived today, although in ruins, and it still partly functions as a performance site. Even if in ancient times it was most often alluded to as the site of gladiator game or executions, today it is a site related to music, art, Christianity and grandeur.
