Operas in Vienna

One of the leading European capitals, Vienna, is a lively and bustling city offering all possible kinds of entertainment. However, once you are in the place that features even more traces of Mozart's life and work than his home town Salzburg, there is no better choice for an evening out than going to one of the opera houses for an authentic musical feast. Splendid performances take place almost every night at the Staatsoper Wien, Theater an der Wien, Volksoper Wien, and other similar venues. Treat yourself to an unforgettable cultural experience!

The Vienna Staatsoper is among the Austrian capital’s most photographed structures, displaying its full grandeur if viewed from the Opernring street. This building has hosted many important premieres over the decades and is a venue welcoming innovative performances and reworked versions of classic operatic pieces. The facade of the 1869 structure is one of the finest examples of Viennese architecture. The horse sculptures by Ernst Julius Hähnel dominating the main entrance are enhanced by five bronze allegoric statues, propped upon pedestals inside the arched loggia.

Although its name might lure one into believing that this site is principally a concert hall, Theater an der Wien remains strictly an opera house. This was the site, which the famous librettist of Mozart's 'The Magic Flute', Emanuel Schikaneder, erected in 1801, following the edicts of Mozart. In 2006, the opera house underwent a rejuvenation of sorts, following the events commemorating the 250th birthday of Mozart. The opera is active twelve months a year, with at least one première monthly, and is geared towards distinctly independent performances. The Theater an der Wien seeks to establish a more accessible approach to music, and maintains a focus on contemporary interpretations of classical pieces. The building itself has a rather evocative architecture and enjoys a vivid location, within the centre of the bustling life on the Naschmarkt street market. A youth cultural hub is also set in its immediate vicinity, in the Schleifmühl quarter.

Wiener Kammeroper, or the Vienna Chamber Opera, was founded by conductor Hans Gabor, a post-war expatriate from Hungary. The Kammeroper began in 1948 as the Vienna Opera Studio, a company without a permanent theatre. The name Wiener Kammeroper, first used in 1953, bears an explicit reference to the genre of chamber music and designates the opera company’s preference for intimate settings and smaller auditoriums.

Volksoper Wien, literally translating to Vienna People's Opera, is one of the principal venues for operatic performances in the Austrian capital. The site is mostly known for its orientation towards lighter operatic genres and its immense productivity. This opera, in a single season, stages more than 300 performances and completes approximately 25 productions.
