Cafés in Paris

The Parisian café is something very typical, a part of the French traditions and one of the most significant characteristics of social life in the city. During the 19th century over 20 000 cafes appeared and turned to a favourite place where people met to discuss music, art, theatre and some news of the day. Decorated with artistic paintings, photos or posters, the cafes are a charming spot to stop by and have a drink or a snack. Some of the most popular cafes in Paris are: Le Procope, dating from 1686 and thus the most ancient café in the city; Café de Flore, which was often visited by Sartre and other intellectuals, today frequented by celebrities like Karl Legerfeld; and finally Les Deux Magots, founded in 1875 and being a host of famous artists and writers like Hemingway, Sartre and Picasso.
