One of the most breathtaking cities of the Old World, Barcelona is a unique blend of elements that might seem impossible to combine. A strange mixture of old and modern, exoticism and tradition determine the carnivalesque atmosphere of this metropolis. Barcelona's unlimited imagination, awakened by Antoni Gaudí over a Century ago, refuses to submit to any form of restraint. The Catalonian capital rules the hearts of all restless spirits, who continue to flock into it from the most remote parts of the globe.

If you’re visiting Barcelona with children, be sure to visit the Barcelona Zoo, located inside the 18th-Century Parc de la Ciutadella. Its numerous inhabitants roam about freely in their reconstructed natural habitats. A mini-playground features a small train, electric cars and pony rides. The area for children is surrounded by a number of good restaurants and cafés, from where parents can keep an eye on their children while enjoying a cup of coffee or a meal. A nearby picnic site offers a pleasant alternative for a family lunch. Parc d'Atraccions Tibidabo is an exciting amusement park offering rollercoaster rides in Medieval surroundings. On a rainy day, stop by the Barcelona Aquarium, exhibiting a large collection of exotic marine creatures.

The abundance of greenness and picturesque parks will enthral nature enthusiasts. Park Güell, the ultimate symbol of Antonio Gaudi's unlimited talent, is a genuine fairyland featuring an original combination of fantastic constructions and the surrounding natural rock formations. Benches adorned with elaborate patterns of crushed ceramic tiles adorn a terrace from which visitors can adore a breathtaking view of the city.

Parc de la Ciudadella and Parc Laberint are also famous for their beautiful panoramas. The Botanical Gardens is a never-ending sea of vivid colours and unique shapes. Wander through the maze of paths to discover plant species that you'd never even imagined existed. If you like the exoticism of the gardens, drop by Jardins Costa i Llobera to see rare plants from Mexico, Kenya and Ethiopia, as well as from distant parts of the Mediterranean.

Those who enjoy spending their holidays engaging in sports will appreciate the multitude of options available in Barcelona. Due to the city's seaside location, visitors can enjoy a wide range of water sports, including surfing, scuba-diving and para-sailing. In the spring and summer, the city hosts important regattas. Tennis enthusiasts will find a number of prime-quality courts in every district. A world-famous tennis tournament takes place in April.
