Nightlife in Vienna

A picture of cultural sophistication during the day, at night Vienna becomes a versatile land of sheer fun, ready to indulge even the most demanding taste for entertainment. Regardless of whether you're staying in the centre or the suburbs, you can be sure that the exciting labyrinth of pubs and clubs begins just outside your door.

What better way to begin the night in Vienna than a visit to one of the traditional coffee houses, which are an essential part of life in the city. Over your coffee – which should cost around 2 euro – you can rest after a long day of sightseeing and recharge your batteries for an even longer night of fun. Recommended coffee houses include the minimalist Stein (Währingerstrasse 6–8) and Café Demel (Kohlmarkt 14), offering expensive but unmissable pastries.

From the coffee house, move on to one of the city's extraordinary bars, which will help you get right into the party mood. The greatest concentration of bars is to be found in the so-called Bermuda Triangle (Bermuda Dreieck), which is the old Jewish Quarter. Other areas where many great pubs and cafés can be found include the Fourth (Naschmarkt), Seventh (Spittelberg) and Eighth (Amerlinghaus) districts. The general rule is that the most interesting spots are outside of the tourist centres.

The list of bars definitely worth a visit includes the American Bar (Kärntnerdurchgang 1), designed by famous architect Adolf Loos in 1908, the vibrant Blue Box (Richtergasse 8), Café Europa (Zollergasse 8) and Amerlingsbeisl (Stiftgasse 8), primarily for its charming garden. Chelsea (Lerchenfeldergürtel 29 - 31), located under the S-Bahn arches, features regular live concerts and football games on a big screen.

Fans of live music will certainly have nothing to complain about in the Austrian capital. The city's top jazz clubs are Porgy & Bess (Riemengasse 11), Jazzland (Franz-Josefs-Kai 23) and the Clair Piano Bar (Naglergasse 23). When visiting Vienna in the summer, don't miss the chance to see one of the many open-air concerts held on the Danube Island (Donauinsel). Larger musical acts take place at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion (Meiereistrasse 2).
