Nightlife in Rome
Ancient and dignified, Rome is certainly not the first place we think of when someone asks us about Europe's premiere nightlife centres. First-time visitors are likely to be stunned by the maze of trendy bars, chic cafés, laid-back pubs and vibrant nightclubs which open their doors to the crowds of fun-seekers after sundown.
Those who know the Italian capital well say that in Rome, it's possible to go dancing every night of the week. Remember, however, that for Romans party time begins quite late – after dinner, which usually means 11pm or even midnight -- so you’re highly unlikely to find any nightclubs open before that time. But, you’ll have plenty of time to prepare yourself for hitting the dance floor at one of the city’s countless pubs and bars.
The greatest concentration of bars and pubs can be found in the area of Campo dei Fiori, Via della Pace and Piazza Navona. Vineria (Campo dei Fiori) attracts a very diverse clientele, ranging from celebrities to students. The nearby Il Nolano (Piazza Campo dei Fiori 11) is generally less crowded, but nevertheless a great spot for fascinating people-watching. Further on, there's the expats’ favourite, Drunken Ship (Piazza Campo dei Fiori 20). Delicious cocktails are available at Antico Caffè della Pace (Via della Pace 5) as well as Caffè di Marzio (Piazza Santa Maria, Trastevere 15).
Most pubs, cafés and wine bars are open until midnight in the winter, and as late as 2am in the summer. Prices for drinks vary considerably, depending on the area or the kind of place you choose. Generally, a glass of wine in a centrally located bar can cost anything between 2 and 7 euro. A large glass of draught beer is usually priced at around 5 euro.
After you inaugurate the night in a pub, it's time to move on to the club. These are mostly concentrated in the Testaccio and Ostiense districts. Via di Monte Testaccio in Testaccio is lined with all types of nightclubs, bars and live music venues. Popular spots include Alibi (Via Monte Testaccio 39), usually playing house music, and Zoobar (Via Monte Testaccio 22), a friendly host to a mixed crowd of tourists and locals. In Ostiense, Goa (Via Libetta 13) regularly houses performances by the world's best DJs. A bit further down the road, there's Classico Village, two floors of sheer fun situated in a former factory hall.
