Athens has a wide variety of shops that sell everything from low-priced souvenirs to authentic antiques and precious jewellery. Prices are comparable to those in other EU countries, but during the summer and winter sales an array of goods can be bought at strongly reduced prices, particularly clothing and shoes. The gift shops in the tourist area of Plaka offer souvenirs and Greek art, while the flea market in Monastiraki is the place to look for antiques and old books. Furthermore, there are excellent jewellery shops in the city, many of them selling reproductions of ancient Greek jewels in traditional and modern designs.
