Visas to Belgium

Before you travel to Belgium, find out about visa restrictions. The nationals of the Schengen Agreement countries do not require a visa. However citizens of countries outside the Schengen Agreement should apply for a visa. There are three types of visas depending on the duration of  stay and the number of entries. For more info on whether you need to apply for a visa to enter Austria, visit the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Before sending or bringing in your application, contact the nearest Consulate or Embassy to verify your information about the required documents and the visa fee.


Who Requires a Visa

  • Nationals of Great Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland and Japan do not require a visa for stays up to three months.
  • Nationals of the EU and Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Brunei, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Iceland, Israel, South Korea,  Liechtenstein,  Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, Nicaragua, New Zealand, Panama, Paraguay, San Marino, Singapore, Uruguay, the Vatican City and Venezuela do not require a visa.
  • Nationals of the rest of the world's countries need to apply either for a short-term, a long term, or a transit visa.

Short-Stay Visa

  • A short-stay visa is valid for a period of 90 days.
  • It is issued for family visits, business purposes, and tourism.

Long-Stay Visa

  • A long-stay visa is valid for a period of more than 90 days.
  • Nationals of the countries not listed above and wishing to stay in Belgium for a period of more than three months to study, to take up employment, to set up a business or to settle without engaging in any professional activity.

Transit Visa

  • A visa is not required by transit passengers on their journey by the same or the first connecting craft if they have the documentation needed and they do not leave the airport.
  • Nationals of Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Congo (Dem Rep), Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, India, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic always require an airport transit visa.
