Visas in Spain

Before you travel to Spain, find out about visa restrictions. The nationals of the Schengen Agreement countries do not require a visa. However citizens of countries outside the Schengen Agreement should apply for a visa. There are several types of visas depending on the duration of  stay and the number of entries. For more info on whether you need to apply for a visa to enter Italy, visit the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Before sending or bringing in your application, contact the nearest Consulate or Embassy to verify your information about the required documents and the visa fee.


Who Requires a Visa

  • Nationals of the EU countries do not require a visa for a stay up to 90 days.
  • Nationals of Australia, Canada, Japan and the US may visit Spain without a visa for business and tourist purposes for a period up to 90 days.
  • Nationals of Andorra, Argentina, Aruba, Bolivia, Brazil, Brunei, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Croatia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, the Netherlands Antilles, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Poland, San Marino, Singapore, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Switzerland, Uruguay, the Vatican City and Venezuela may not require a visa for a stay up to 90 days.
  • Transit passengers who continue their journey by the same or first connecting aircraft and hold onward or return documentation and do not leave the airport (except nationals of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia and Sri Lanka) do not need a transit visa.
  • Nationalities of all other countries not mentioned above require a visa.

Student Visa

People studying for a period longer than 90 days may require a student visa.

The validity of a visa

  •  The validity of a visa varies and depends on the type of visa obtained.
  • A short stay visa is valid for a stay of up to 90 days per entry and six months from the date of issue.
  • A transit visa is valid for a maximum of 5 days per entry. 
  • A new application should be made as visa expires. A visa cannot be prolonged.
