Climate in Belgium

Belgium is a small country. It borders  the Netherlands to the north, France to the west, Germany to the east along with  Luxembourg, morover It has a short coastline on the North Sea. Belgium's weather is similar to that of the Netherlands. It varies considerably  from day to day and from year to year. Belgium has a temperate maritime climate influenced by  the Atlantic Ocean which causes  frequent and heavy rainfall, with an average of 1000 mm a year.

Daily sunshine amounts range from two hours a day in January to seven or even eight hours in June. Winters are wet and cool with frequent fogs, summers are quite mild. The average annual temperature is 10 degrees Celsius. The average minimum temperature is – 0.3 degrees Celsius, the average maximum 21.6 degrees. Even though Belgium is not a large country, it can  be divided into three climatic regions: north, central and southern.

The North
The northern part of Belgium is low-lying and flat and weather conditions are similar to those in the Netherlands. It has mild winters and cool and crisp  summers. The climate is predominantly maritime.

Central Belguim
The central part of the country is moderately elevated and covers a gently rolling countryside. The climate here is a little colder in winter. Summers are warmer and wetter than on the coast. Thunderstorms are frequent in summer.

Southern Belgium
The southern part of Belgium is not so densely populated. This is the region known as  the Ardennes with forested hills with an average altitude of 300-500 m. Winter here is much colder and snow may lie on the ground for fifty days or more. Winters are also wetter than in the north region. Fog is a frequent phenomenon. Summers are a bit cooler and somewhat wetter. There may be severe spells of cold weather in the winter.

Clothing in Belgium
European clothes according to the season. Medium to heavy attire in winter, light clothing for summer weather. Waterproof  clothes all year round.
