Shopping in Greece
Shopping in Greece is dominated by large supermarkets, department stores, and online purchases. Despite this you still might be able to find local Bakalike (grocers shop) and so-called 'local and colonial' shops, true leftovers of times past. If searching for giftsyou could try the local lace, jewellery and metalwork, as well as excellent pottery, garments and knitwear, rugs, leather goods and wines.
Rather than just sticking to apast dominated by small shops and door-to-door vendors, Greece has succumbed to international companies that have opened numerous franchises across the country. Some typical examples include grocery stores (the Spar) and department stores, as well as Swedish furniture stores, the German 'do-it-yourself' Praktiker chain, and also ALDI, the German discount grocery giant. British companies like Marks and Spencer's or Virgin Stores are also here, as well as Italian Bennetton and a long line of other fashion stores from all across Europe. These, however, are concentrated on Greekhigh fashion streets, rright next to many other brands of international renown. However Greece’s most successful sales outlet remains the Periptera (kiosks). They sell basic goods, as well as old-fashioned milk shops (the equivalents of the British corner shop), where you can find a limited selection of foods and household goods. Another favourite are the weekly street markets, sell a vast selection of goods and move to different neighborhoods daily.
Athens is the country’s main hub for luxury goods and handicrafts. Particularly popular is the Sunday morning flea market in Monastiraki near the Acropolis. The regional goods on display feature silver from Ioannina, ceramics from Sifnos and Skopelos, embroidery from Crete, the Ionian Islands, Rhodes and Skiros, as well as fine examples of Kastorian fur, alabaster from Crete as well as flokati rugs from the Epirus region. Athens is also known for its antiques. You can also purchase prints and reproductions from the gift shop of the National Archaeological Museum where you'll find small bronzes and brass statues of the Olympian gods.
Other places to shop in the country include Delphi where you can purchase rugs and wool blankets, silver jewellery, handwoven sweaters, and fancy fur hats. Ioannina is the place to buy copper and brassware, as well as silver jewelry, while Crete offers locally woven rugs. On the island you will also find olive oil soaps, woven bags, herb cosmetics and home-made honey, as well as replicas of ancient Minoan ceramics. Delos is the place to buy sweatshirts and t-shirts with images taken from Ancient Delian Mosaics. Kalmynos, as well as most of the other islands, is known for of its reasonably priced sponges, while Mykonos will surprise you with its diverse selection of gold jewellery. Other items within are mermaid puppets, icons, incenses and wax candles. Rhodes is the place to find hand-woven lace table goods, polychrome-glazed pottery with depictions of Rhodian deer and the Colossus of Rhodes, and there's a good selection of leather goods too. Santorini is another hot spot for gold jewelry shopping. It is ere where you are also likely to find hand-woven sweaters and items with Minoan images.
