Transportation in the Netherlands

The Netherlands features an extensive network of public transportation, which connects the country very well with neighbouring Belgium and Germany, and across the North Sea with the United Kingdom. Excellent facilities and regular service makes getting around the country fast and easy. More than anywhere else in Europe, bikes are employed as a popular means of everyday transportation.

Bus
Eurolines operates a number of convenient long-distance coach connections between Amsterdam and many cities across Europe. Citysprint buses also travel across the English Channel to the United Kingdom. There's also an extensive network of domestic links between the major cities and smaller towns, with Connexxion being the main operator.

The Netherlands' system of roads is excellent, although traffic jams occur frequently around the major cities during rush hour. The country can be easily accessed from neighbouring Germany and Belgium. The speed limit on the motorways is 120 km/h, 80 km/h on open roads and 50 km/h within towns. There are no toll motorways; however, you might encounter tunnels and bridges in which a fee has to be paid.
Train
The railway network in the Netherlands is reliable and comfortable, but unfortunately quite expensive. Every day, a number of trains run between Amsterdam's central station and cities within and outside of the country. An Intercity connection with Brussels is available every hour. The high-speed Thalys train runs between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Hague, Brussels, Antwerp and Paris. A well-developed regional network links the smaller towns. It's possible to purchase a Holland Rail Pass, allowing unlimited travel within the country for 3-5 days.

The national carrier, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, as well as Amsterdam-based Martinair and transavia.com offer scheduled connections with a variety of destinations around the world.
