Students in Italy

Foreign students are drawn to Italy because of the rich culture, history and natural surroundings that make studying here an inspiring experience. Italy is one of the countries that initiated the higher education reform called ‘Bologna Process’ (Bologna Declaration, June 1999), which is currently being carried out throughout Europe. The country conducts a wide range of basic and applied research in such fields as Biology, Medicine, ICT, Physics, etc.

What and where to study in Italy

Italy’s most renowned institutions of higher education are the University in Padova, known particularly for its Faculty of Pharmacy that tops all other such faculties in the country, and the University of Bologna, providing courses in plant, vegetable and wine-making. Other prestigious universities include: the University of Siena, ‘Luiss Guido Carli’ and ‘La Sapienza’ in Rome, the University of Perugia and ‘Scuola Normale Superiore’ in Pisa. ‘The Palazzo Rucellai Institute of Fine and Liberal Arts”, located in the middle of Florence’s historic centre, focuses on the Florentine tradition of art. Italian students most frequently choose the humanistic faculties.

Foreign students in Italy

Most students in Italy choose to find their own housing, often by checking the university notice board where the latest accommodations can easily be found. Some, however, decide to dwell in student hotels that can be found in many Italian cities. For female students, it is increasingly popular to live with a family and take up childcare. ‘The Guide for Foreign Students” providing detailed information on student hostels and other students facilities is available from the Italian Ministry of Education. In some universities there are offices which give assistance to international students.
