Students in the Netherlands

The Netherlands, commonly known as Holland, has established itself as the centre of knowledge with strong educational traditions and reputed universities. A number of factors contribute to why the country is an ideal study abroad destination, among them: degrees recognised anywhere in the world, multicultural learning environment, wide variety of study programmes conducted in English as well as relatively low study costs (approximately 13,000 – 18,000 EUR a year).

What and where to study in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is home to 14 government-funded universities that vary greatly in size of student body. Of these, Tilburg University offers a broad range of study programmes in economics, business administration, law, social and behavioural sciences, theology and philosophy. Delft University of Technology provides high-quality education in the fields of science, engineering and design. Another top university, the University of Twente concentrates on governance, technology as well as health and management. Universities of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands are known for placing strong emphasis on the practical application of knowledge. For over 50 years now, the country has offered a certain form of higher education, namely advanced courses conducted in English in so-called international education. There are five large Institutes for International Education, accompanied by a number of smaller ones.

Foreign students in the Netherlands
University accommodation in the Netherlands is next to none. However, housing will often be arranged for those who are participating in an exchange programme or an international course. If this is your case, you should accept it without objection, otherwise you are likely to experience problems in finding a place to live, especially in Amsterdam and around. Already in the Netherlands and still looking for housing? Take the initiative by asking for advice from the international relations office or the student dean; you can also let your fellow students know that you are in need of a room.
